Documentary awarded the Golden Bear at the Berlinale 2024
November 2021. 26 royal treasures of the Kingdom of Dahomey are about to leave Paris to return to their country of origin, the present-day Republic of Benin. Along with thousands of others, these artefacts were plundered by French colonial troops in 1892. But what attitude to adopt to these ancestors’ homecoming in a country that had to forge ahead in their absence? The debate rages among students at the University of Abomey-Calavi.
Diop’s film is a delightful exercise in mixing reality with creativity, as much as it is important in presenting how the colonial past still influences the present, and how complicated and multilayered that heritage is.

Mati Diop
Née le 22 juin 1982 à Paris, Mati Diop est une actrice et réalisatrice franco-sénégalaise. Elle réalise son premier court-métrage Last Night (2004) qui est programmé à la Cinémathèque Française.
En 2008 elle intègre le Fresnoy, studio national des arts contemporains, où elle réalise le court-métrage Atlantiques. La même année, elle joue dans le film de Claire Denis 35 Rhums.
Après avoir réalisé plusieurs courts-métrages, elle présente son premier long-métrage Atlantique en compétition officielle au festival de Cannes en 2019. Son film obtient le Grand Prix.
Dahomey son dernier film documentaire est présenté en compétition à la Berlinale en 2024 et remporte l’Ours d’Or.
