Francis Ford Coppola (born April 7, 1939, in Detroit, Michigan) is an American director, screenwriter, and producer, and a major figure of the New Hollywood movement. He is best known for The Godfather (1972) and its sequels, which redefined the gangster film genre, as well as Apocalypse Now (1979), a masterpiece on the Vietnam War. A multiple Academy Award and Palme d’Or winner, Coppola is a visionary filmmaker who has often taken artistic and financial risks, notably with his studio Zoetrope. After a quieter period, he returns in 2024 with Megalopolis, an ambitious project he self-financed.
