Synopsis

The amazing Grand Prix of the last Cannes Film Festival.

In Mumbai, Nurse Prabha’s routine is troubled when she receives an unexpected gift from her estranged husband. Her younger roommate, Anu, tries in vain to find a spot in the city to be intimate with her boyfriend. A trip to a beach town allows them to find a space for their desires to manifest.

Although All We Imagine as Light is my first fiction feature, it’s still very important to me that fiction and documentary can exist together. What I try do is to approach fiction in a non-fiction way.

Critiques

There is a freshness and emotional clarity in Payal Kapadia’s Cannes competition selection, an enriching humanity and gentleness which coexist with fervent, languorous eroticism and finally something epiphanic in the later scenes and mysterious final moments.
Peter Bradshaw The Guardian 23/05/2024
Few films have ever so beautifully captured the lonesome romance of Mumbai after dark.
Jessica Kiang Variety 23/05/2024
It’s a light for audiences to surrender to, a realist-infused story of three women broadly representing three generations in a city where their hold is fragile, where their breaths barely leave a mist of a trace.
Fionnuala Halligan Screen Daily 24/05/2024
