A story of love and violence in contemporary China
After their chance encounter, Xia Yo – a businesswoman and victim of an abusive husband – runs away with Xu Zitai, a man doomed by illness. Closely bound by desire and passion, they embark on a journey of physical and emotional liberation, an exploration of life and death.Adapted from Li Xiuwen’s 2003 novel, Bound in Heaven follows a distinctly novelistic structure by infiltrating various periods of the same relationship, which is shaken by a young man’s illness and invigorated by the heroine’s passion. A unique love story which subtly narrates the major socio-economic shifts of contemporary China.

Huo XIN
Huo Xin graduated from the Department of Drama at the Central Academy of Drama in Beijing. A screenwriter and director, she has written or co-written scripts for films including Zhang Yang’s Shower (1999), Stephen Chow’s Kung Fu Hustle (2004), Zhang’s Full Circle (2012), and Gao Qunshu’s Crimes of Passion (2013.) Bound in Heaven represents her directorial debut.
