Synopsis

Kurosawa returns with a relentless remake of one of his greatest films

Shattered by the disappearance of his eight-year-old daughter and a stagnant police investigation, Albert Bacheret sets out to find her with the few leads he has. In his quest, he receives he unexpected help of Sayoko, a mysterious Japanese psychiatrist. Together, they abduct one of the leaders of the “Circle,” a secret society with shady activities. But this inmate is the bearer of different answers than what they were expecting.

A prolific director—three of his films were released in 2024—and an eternal predator of evil—this leitmotiv runs through his work—Kiyoshi Kurosawa delivers a remake of his 2018 thriller, setting the action in France without losing sight of his country of origin, since the most enigmatic character in this new version is a japanese psychiatrist. This stripped-down, chilling variation once again confirms Kurosawa’s talent for depicting the depths of the human soul.

Critics

« Souvent à la frontière de ce que l’on pourrait décrire comme des liminal spaces, Kurosawa transporte en France ses obsessions visuelles et met en scène ses personnages dans des hangars désaffectés qui semblent hors de ce monde. »
