Synopsis

A biting ensemble film about the Romanian revolution

December 20, 1989. Romania is on the brink of revolution. The authorities are preparing New Year’s festivities as if nothing – or almost nothing – is happening, but the official façade begins to crack. Amid the fervor of the uprising, six lives will intersect over the course of an extraordinary day which leads to the fall of Ceaușescu and his regime.

By unfolding the stories of six distinct characters with varied occupations and backgrounds within a single timeline, Bogdan Mureșanu’s debut feature cleverly approaches a pivotal moment in Romanian history. On the eve of the 1989 revolution, tension builds in ways that are at times fierce, at times oddly comedic, subtly reflecting the political urgency Romania faces once again today.

Critics

“It’s a confident and, at times, savagely funny work which […] builds to a blisteringly powerful conclusion.”
