Synopsis

One man's fight for his right to die

Ramón Sampedro, who became quadriplegic following a diving accident, is unable to end his life by himself and does not wish to involve his family and friends, who would be charged with murder under Spanish law. Based on his true story, The Sea Inside retraces part of the campaign for euthanasia and the right to end one’s life that he led for almost 30 years.

Alejandro Amenábar is a Spanish-Chilean filmmaker and composer. He debuted with THESIS (1996), winning seven Goya awards. He followed with OPEN YOUR EYES (1997), remade as Vanilla Sky. His English debut, THE OTHERS (2001), starring Nicole Kidman, was a global success. THE SEA INSIDE (2004) starring Javier Bardem won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film and over 60 awards. AGORA (2009) was Spain’s highest-grossing film. WHILE AT WAR (2019), presented at Toronto and San Sebastián, earned 17 Goya nominations and captivated over a million viewers in Spain.
