Christmas Eve, 1937, Piatra Neamt, Romania: Dominic Matei, a 70-year-old professor, contemplates suicide. The love of his life is dead, and he remains unable to complete his life’s work on the origins of language. Francis Ford Coppola (born April 7, 1939, in Detroit, Michigan) is an American director, screenwriter, and producer, and a major figure of the New Hollywood movement. He is best known for The Godfather (1972) and its sequels, which redefined the gangster film genre, as well as Apocalypse Now (1979), a masterpiece on the Vietnam War. A multiple Academy Award and Palme d’Or winner, Coppola is a visionary filmmaker who has often taken artistic and financial risks, notably with his studio Zoetrope. After a quieter period, he returns in 2024 with Megalopolis, an ambitious project he self-financed.
